Hair Tips · Color Timing

How Often Should You Refresh Highlights and Roots?

There is no fixed schedule for highlights or root touch-ups. The right timing depends on how fast your hair grows, how different your color is from your natural shade, how the color is placed and how much new growth you are happy to see. Esther sets the rhythm with each client, and this guide helps you plan.

What decides how often I need a touch-up?

  • Contrast: the bigger the difference between your color and your natural shade, the sooner new growth shows.
  • Gray at the root: a gray line shows quickly against darker color.
  • Placement: foil highlights that start near the root leave a clearer line as they grow, while hand-painted balayage grows out softer.
  • Growth: hair grows at different speeds for different people.
  • Tone: toner and glaze fade before highlights do, so blonde can look brassy before roots are an issue.
  • Your life: events, travel, budget and how polished you like to look.

How often do people refresh root color?

For full color that covers gray, many clients come back every four to six weeks, because a gray line shows early. People whose color is close to their natural shade, or who choose soft gray blending, can often go longer.

If you would like more time between visits, ask about gray blending. Softer blending makes the growing-out line less obvious.

How often should highlights be refreshed?

Many clients with foil highlights refresh every six to ten weeks. With balayage, many go a few months, since there is no hard line at the root. A partial highlight between full visits, which brightens the part and the face, can stretch the time between full services.

Partial hi/lo lights are $175+, full hi/lo lights are $250+, balayage is $275+ and partial balayage is $200+. Length, thickness and hair history change the final price, and the free consultation gives your exact quote. See highlights in Palm Beach and balayage in Palm Beach.

How does color first, then highlights help with timing?

Color first, then highlights is Esther's clients' favorite combination. A base color close to your natural shade softens the contrast at the root, while highlights add brightness on top. As hair grows, the line between new hair and colored hair looks gentler. Read more in color first, then highlights.

How can I stretch the time between appointments?

  • Book a glaze between color visits to refresh tone and shine. A glaze on its own is $50.
  • Use a gentle shampoo for colored hair and wash with lukewarm water.
  • Protect color from sun, salt water and chlorine with a hat and a fresh-water rinse.
  • Change your part now and then to soften a visible root.
  • For a special event, a temporary root spray or powder can buy a little time.

How does Esther set the right rhythm for you?

At your consultation, Esther looks at your natural color, your gray, how your color is placed and the look you want. Then she suggests a plan: when to come back for roots, when to refresh highlights and when a glaze is enough. You can change it any time your life or your look changes. Questions clients ask

Is it bad to wait too long between root touch-ups?

It will not harm your hair, but it can make the next visit more work. A lot of new growth can take more time to even out, and a long gap can leave older color looking different from newer color. If you know you will wait, tell Esther so she can plan a softer approach.

Can I touch up my roots at home between visits?

Box color from the store can clash with salon color and make the next appointment harder. If you need a quick fix, a temporary root spray or powder is the safer choice. Text Esther if your roots are bothering you, and she can suggest timing that works.

Do balayage and foil highlights need the same upkeep?

Usually not. Balayage is painted to grow out softly, so many people wait longer between visits. Foil highlights start closer to the root, so the line shows sooner. A glaze can refresh the tone of either one between appointments.
