Bright, Not Brassy: Blonde Care Between Salon Visits

To keep blonde hair bright, protect it from sun, chlorine and heat, wash it gently and refresh its tone at home and in the salon. Blonde turns brassy when warm undertones show through as toner fades and hair gets dry. These steps help your shade stay clean and glossy until your next visit.

Why does blonde hair turn brassy?

Lightening lifts out hair's natural pigment, and underneath most hair has warm yellow and orange tones. A toner or glaze softens those tones into the blonde you chose, but toner fades a little with every wash. Sun, chlorine, minerals in water and heat speed that up, so warmth starts to peek through.

Dryness plays a part too. Dry, rough blonde reflects less light, so it looks dull and more yellow. Bright blonde is mostly healthy, smooth blonde.

How do I use purple shampoo the right way?

Purple or violet shampoo leaves a little cool pigment on the hair that cancels yellow. It works best as an occasional helper, not your everyday shampoo.

  • Use it about once a week, or when you notice yellow creeping in.
  • Leave it on briefly at first, then adjust to how your hair responds.
  • Follow with a moisturizing conditioner, because toning shampoos can feel drying.
  • If your blonde is warm on purpose, such as honey or butter, use it rarely or not at all.

How does a glaze keep blonde bright?

A glaze refreshes tone and adds shine in one step. Esther finishes color with a glaze for mirror shine, and a glaze on its own between color visits can bring blonde back to the shade you love. A glaze with color is $30, and a glaze on its own is $50.

How do sun, salt and pool water affect blonde?

Blonde shows the effects of sun and swimming quickly. A few habits make a real difference:

  • Wear a hat in strong sun. It is the simplest protection there is.
  • On long days outside, use a leave-in or spray made to shield hair from UV.
  • Before you swim, wet your hair with fresh water and smooth on a little conditioner, so it soaks up less pool or ocean water.
  • Rinse right after swimming and wash with a gentle shampoo.
  • Chlorine and minerals can dull blonde or leave an off tone, so regular rinsing matters. More in protecting color from sun, salt and chlorine.

How should I style blonde hair without dulling it?

Heat is hard on lightened hair. Use a heat protectant every time, and keep irons on a moderate setting. Let your hair air-dry partly before you blow-dry, if you can. Detangle gently from the ends up, since lightened hair is more fragile when it is wet.

Once a week, use a moisturizing mask. Soft, smooth blonde reflects light and looks brighter. If your blonde needs extra care, Esther uses Kérastase treatments and products in the salon.

Questions clients ask

How often should I use purple shampoo?

For most blondes, about once a week is plenty. Using it every wash can make blonde look dull, flat or slightly lilac, and it may dry hair out. Use it when you see yellow appear, and always follow with conditioner.

Why does my blonde look dull rather than yellow?

Dryness, product buildup and minerals in water can all make blonde look dull. A gentle clarifying wash now and then, a weekly mask and a glaze in the salon usually bring the brightness back. Unsure of your shade? Read warm or cool blonde.

Can I make my blonde brighter without more lightening?

Often, yes. A glaze can clear away yellow tones and add shine without lifting the hair any lighter, and a weekly mask helps blonde reflect more light. If you want a truly lighter shade, Esther looks at your hair's condition first and plans the lightening carefully.
